Computing which is carried out by the Faculty of Computing for Engineer and Master’s degree (full-time and part-time studies) is distinguished by: world-class research and teaching staff, laboratory and lecture infrastructure, study program which emphasizes learning through practical application, students succeeding internationally. High quality education on this field of study is also reflected in the following facts.
State Accreditation Commission evaluates the quality of education in all fields of study present in state and non-state universities. SAC evaluates quality of education in four-level scale: negative, conditional, positive and distinguished. Since the 1st year of its activity, only 11 fields of study in Poland have received distinguished rating and, as the Chairman of SAC highlights, “distinguished ratings are given only to those faculties and universities, which carry out outstanding studies on a European level”. Among distinguished fields of study, Computing carried out by the Faculty of Computing at Poznan University of Technology has been distinguished twice: in the years 2004 and 2009.
Computing Committee of Polish Academy of Sciences and weekly “Polityka” developed rankings of universities. The main sources of information for those rankings were surveys prepared by experts, which were addressed to and filled by representatives of faculties. Since 2001 Computing carried out by the Faculty of Computing, ranked at the top of both rankings. In 2003 in weekly “Polityka” ranking and in 2008 and 2009 in Computing Committee ranking the field was classified at the 1st place.
Our staff consists of: 11 Titular Professors, 9 Associate Professors, 6 Assistant Professors, 40 Lecturers and 21 Assistants – all are specialists in “Computing” discipline. Among them we find: 3 members of Polish Academy of Sciences (for the total number of 5 PAS members representing Computing), 2 laureates of “Polish Nobel Award” (for the total number of 3 previously awarded in the field of computer science), 7 members of PAS Computing Committee (for the total number of 35). Among Institute of Computing staff there are 3 Honorary Doctorates granted by a few state and foreign universities. No other faculty of Computing in Poland may take pride in such staff. Our staff consists of highly qualified research and teaching employees, who also have rich experience in practical applications. In the category of Ministry of Science and Higher Education and Committee for Scientific Research ratings, the Faculty of Computing achieved the highest position – THE FIRST ONE.
Our students and graduates are successful at home and abroad for many years. Below are only a few examples.
Faculty of Computing at Poznan University of Technology is located in a state-of-the-art Lecturing and Conference Center. Students of Computing have at their disposal 18 specialized laboratories for: prototyping electronic circuits, data bases, software engineering, internet technologies. Additionally, each student of Computing can use licensed software of Microsoft and IBM for free, as the part of the so-called academic license.
In 2006, in cooperation with the Institute of Computing, Poznan Supercomputing and Networking Center and Microsoft Company, we created Microsoft Innovation Center which supports innovative solutions and technologies for IT security and outsourcing services. In 2007, in cooperation with IBM and Institute of Computing, we created Eclipse Support Center offering technical support for Eclipse programmers environment and users from all over the world.
B.A. and M.A. Computing studies program at Poznan University of Technology emphasizes teaching through realization of both research and implementation projects. Software Development Studio is an example where teams of students implement IT projects for actual recipients. Teaching programs are prepared stacked in cooperation with Employers Council FCPUT, composed of representatives of companies such as: Microsoft, Samsung, Roche, Cognifide and many others.
A very important component of our students’ knowledge is English language. The English-language Software Engineering specialization is carried out on the second-cycle studies for Polish and foreign students.
Thanks to the cooperation of the Faculty of Computing with companies, the students have the opportunity to undergo internships and trainings at international corporations (e.g. Microsoft Research in Redmond, IBM Poland), foreign universities and research centers. Each year, the best students of Computing from the Faculty of Computing at Poznan University of Technology undergo internships at the Microsoft Research in Redmond. There is also a possibility to write the Master thesis in cooperation with foreign universities, and the best students have the possibility of obtaining a double Master diploma of Poznan University of Technology and University of Klagenfurt (Austria). Moreover, our students have the opportunity to undergo internships in leading companies from the region, inter alia: Allegro, Jeronimo Martins Distribution, BlueSky Travel.
Students of Computing as a part of studies and outside courses are involved in many commercial projects for external companies, e.g. Volkswagen Poland, Roche Poland, Allegro, Eskulap. They are also involved in international projects funded by the European Union. The result of the implementation of commercial IT projects by the Institute of Computing, are two spin-off companies: NaviExpert and Itiner, founded and run by the Institute of Computing employees.
Since 2010 Computing specialty carried out by the Faculty of Computing at Poznan University of Technology has been implemented as the so-called ordered field specialty. The project is focused exclusively on students. The project covers students recruited in academic year 2010/11 and the following. For students, the benefits from the implementation of projects are as follows:
The direct effect of the education offer and activities taken by the Computing field of study at the Faculty of Computing at Poznan University of Technology is the high value of its students on the labor market – students during their studies receive lucrative job offers. The best ones can undertake third-cycle studies to obtain a PhD degree.
Poznan University of Technology takes part in Erasmus Program – international exchange of students and teaching staff. We have agreements signed with a few universities from Europe. Thanks to this cooperation our students can realize up to two semesters of studies in selected foreign university.
